A genetically engineered version of the virus that causes herpes shows promise as a treatment for a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer, according to a new study in animals.

The virus targeted and killed triple-negative breast cancer cells in mice. Triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that cannot be treated with hormone therapies, such as tamoxifen and Herceptin.

The results are preliminary, and it’s not clear whether the therapy will have the same effect on tumors growing in people. Much more research is needed to determine this. If a treatment is developed, it will likely be used in conjunction with other cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation, the researchers said.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/10/26/herpes-virus-could-kill-aggressive-breast-cancer/#ixzz1cMcR62t7

The study was presented at the meeting of the American College of Surgeons in San Francisco.

Herpes therapy

Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for about 20 percent of all breast cancer cases. It disproportionally effects young, African-American women and is usually treated with chemotherapy. (Triple-negative breast cancers are not fueled by the hormone estrogen, so they do no respond to treatments designed to block the hormone.)

Study researcher Dr. Sepideh Gholami, a research fellow in the at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. and colleagues infected breast cancer cells in a dish with a herpes virus called NV1066. Within a week, the virus killed up to 90 percent of the tumor cells.

The researchers then injected breast cancer cells into mice. After treating the mice with the virus for 20 days, they saw the tumors had largely disappeared, Gholami said.

The dramatic response may be due to the fact that triple-negative breast cancer cells have high levels of a protein called p-MAPK. The herpes virus specifically targets cells with high levels of this protein, the researchers said.

The therapy is just one of many in recent years to explore the use of viruses as a means to target and destroy cancer cells. The herpes virus has been tested in people as a treatment for head and neck cancer, but not for breast cancer, the researchers said.

More research

The study is an “extremely exciting step” in the pursuit of a cancer therapy that uses the herpes virus, said Dr. Stefan Gluck, a medical oncologist at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

However, the researchers still need to show that this herpes virus is safe to use in patients. After all, the herpes virus is known to cause infection in humans, including infections in the brain. Proving the therapy’s safety will likely be a lengthy process, and will involve testing it on other animals first, such as dogs and primates, Gluck said.

The researchers plan to figure out exactly how the virus works to kill the breast cancer cells, and try to bolster its effect.

Pass it on: The herpes virus can infect and kill breast cancer cells in a dish and in mice.

Herpes is a virus that is spread by skin to skin contact with an actively infected partner with an existing herpes outbreak. This particular virus is responsible for herpes, cold sores, genital herpes, all are types of the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

There are two types of the Herpes Simplex Virus:

Type 1 (HSV-1)
Type 2 (HSV-2)

HSV-1 or Cold Sores is commonly found in or around the mouth, lips, nose, between the nose and lips, face or surrounding areas. HSV type 1 most commonly causes sores on the lips, commonly called cold sores. Type 1 herpes can also be anywhere on the body, above the waist. Herpes on the back is called Shingles (Herpes Zoster), another nice word for herpes. Shingles effects usually older people above 60 years old, but not always.

HSV-2 or Genital Herpes is a more intense strand of the Herpes Simplex Virus. Commonly found below the waist, on the genitals, buttocks, and the anus. However, both of these viruses can cause herpes infections on the face, genitals, or other body areas, depending on the type of HSV that caused the original infection.

The virus will not change into a different strand (for example HSV type 1 will not turn into HSV type 2). However, a person can contract HSV type 1 on the genitals through contact with an open cold sore during oral sex, causing a genital herpes infection.

To determine which strand of the Herpes Simplex Virus you may have been infected with, and is causing an infection, a proper testing is recommended, such as a “type specific” blood test or culture swab test should be done. Just ask your doctor for this specific testing.

What is Genital Herpes?

Genital herpes is a contagious viral infection that affects an estimated 1 out of 4 adult Americans. Each year, as many as 500,000 new cases are believed to occur. The infection is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV type 2 most often causes genital sores on the vagina, and penis, but it also can infect the mouth through oral sex.

A genital herpes infection usually is acquired by sexual contact with someone who has the active herpes virus in their system HSV-1 (transmitted through oral sex) or HSV-2 (transmitted through sexual contact). It can be active and contagious even when sores are not present in the genital area (this is called viral shedding).

What are the Symptoms and Stages of Herpes and Cold Sores?

Phase 1 – Prodrome: area gets warm and painful; tingling is associated with this first stage.
Phase 2 – Macule: Area becomes red (erythema); a type of hypersensitivity or allergic reaction that occurs in response to the virus.
Phase 3 – Papule: Small red bumps form, often accompanied by a throbbing pain.
Phase 4 – Vesicle: Colorless, fluid-filled blisters start to develop.
Phase 5 – Postule: At this stage a clear liquid becomes yellow and pus forms.
Phase 6 – Crust: A yellowish crust forms on the affected area.
Phase 7 – Scab: Area becomes reddish and dry; area itches.
Phase 8 – Healing: Pain disappears; the scab falls off.

Within a few days, sores (also called lesions) appear at the site of infection. Lesions also can occur on the cervix in the women or in the urinary passage in men. These small red bumps may develop into blisters or painful open sores. Over a period of days, the sores become crusted and then heal. Other symptoms that may accompany a primary episode of genital herpes can include fever, headache, muscle aches, painful or difficult urination, vaginal discharge and swollen glands in the groin area.

If your looking for Shingles Natural Remedies, you’ve come to the right place.

Shingles isn’t a fun virus to get. It starts as Chicken Pox, which people most commonly experienced as a child, but adults can get it too. At a later stage in life, the virus can re-emerge itself as a painful rash called Shingles.

It is extremely important to begin treating your condition as soon as possible with the best Shingles Natural Remedies. I believe in a natural approach to cure Shingles, as taking drugs or chemical lotions can be quite harmful for your body.

I’ve compiled for a you a list of some useful Shingles Natural Remedies that you can begin using right away.

1) Oatmeal Bath

One of the most beneficial Shingles Natural Remedies is the oatmeal bath. Baths are great because you can soak your entire body underwater. Plus, good quality oatmeal blended up and added to a bathtub can stop itchiness, burning, pain and has a healing effect on the blisters.

2) Neem Leaves

Neem Leaves is also a very useful Shingles remedy. You can find Neem Leaves at your local health foods store. You just simply add a few of them to a lukewarm bath, mix it up, and enjoy the added healing effects.

3) Honey

A lot of people enjoy using Honey as one of the Shingles Natural Remedies. You will want to make sure you are using natural, organic Honey (nothing too processed). Just smear a thin layer overy our skin and leave it on for a while. This should help with the itchiness, burning, pain and healing.

Try out these three Shingles Natural Remedies. It is important to take gentle care of the infected skin while it is covered in blisters and spots. The reason is that you don’t want any of the blisters to turn into scars or get much worse.

My recommendation is to use a combination of effective Shingles Natural Remedies for the fastest and safest treatment of Shingles (alternative spellings: Shingles, Shingels, Shingle).

Bob Carlton is a nutritionist, medical
researcher, and author of the Fast
Shingles Cure e-book.

After infection, the virus enters the nerve cells and travels up the nerve until it comes to a place called a ganglion. There, it lays quietly in a stage that is referred to as “dormant” or “latent.” At times, the virus can become active and start replicating again and travel down the nerve to the skin, causing sores and blisters. The exact mechanism behind this is not clear, but it is known that some conditions seem to be associated with recurrences, including triggers are:

a fever, a cold, or the flu

ultraviolet radiation (exposure to the sun)

stress

weak immune system

trauma to the involved area

diet and nutrition, eating the wrong foods that trigger cold sores

This is why EverCLR3 is so effective, it takes care of boosting your immune system, and helps to manage your stress better in it’s anti-viral formula.

Herpes can be spread from one part of the body to another during an outbreak. It is also possible to spread the herpes virus infection even if you are not having an outbreak, so no prevention method is 100% effective. Still, certain preventive techniques can reduce your chances of spreading the infection to others.

Therefore, it is important not to touch the eyes or mouth after touching the blisters or ulcers.

Thorough hand washing is a must during outbreaks.

Clothing that comes in contact with ulcers should not be shared with others.

Couples that want to minimize the risk of transmission should always use condoms if a partner is infected. Unfortunately, even when an infected partner isn’t currently having an outbreak, herpes can be spread.

Couples may also want to consider avoiding all sexual contact, including kissing, during an outbreak of herpes. It is important to avoid sexual contact from the time the initial symptoms begin (if present) until the scabs have disappeared.

Since an active genital herpes outbreak (with blisters) during labor and delivery can be harmful to the infant, pregnant women who suspect that they have genital herpes should tell their doctor. Women who have herpes and are pregnant can have a vaginal delivery as long as they are not experiencing symptoms or actually having an outbreak while in labor.

Although there is no known cure for herpes, there are treatments for the outbreaks. There are oral medications, such as acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), or valacyclovir (Valtrex), that prevent the virus from multiplying and even shorten the length of the eruption. Although topical (applied directly on the lesions) agents exist, they are generally less effective than other medications and are not routinely used. Medication that is taken by mouth, or in severe cases intravenously, is more effective. It is important to remember that there is still no cure for genital herpes and that these treatments only reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks.

Since the initial infection with HSV tends to be the most severe episode, an antiviral medication usually is warranted. These medications can significantly reduce pain and decrease the length of time until the sores heal, but treatment of the first infection does not appear to reduce the frequency of recurrent episodes.

In contrast to a new outbreak of genital herpes, recurrent herpes episodes tend to be mild, and the benefit of antiviral medications is only derived if therapy is started immediately prior to the outbreak or within the first 24 hours of the outbreak. Thus, the antiviral drug must be provided for the patient in advance. The patient is instructed to begin treatment as soon as the familiar pre-outbreak “tingling” sensation occurs or at the very onset of blister formation.

Finally, suppressive therapy to prevent frequent recurrences may be indicated for those with more than six outbreaks in a given year. Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) may all be given as suppressive therapies.

Natural Remedies such as Dynamiclear, Virulute, and EverCLR3 can also be applied or taken to natually control the Herpes Virus.

Genital herpes is suspected when multiple painful blisters occur in a sexually exposed area. During the initial outbreak, fluid from the blisters may be sent to the laboratory to try and culture the virus, but cultures only return a positive result in about 50% of those infected. In other words, a negative test result from a blister is not as helpful as a positive test result, because the test may be a false-negative test. However, if a sample of a fluid-filled blister (in the early stage before it dries up and crusts) tests positive for herpes, the test result is very reliable. Cultures taken during an initial outbreak of the condition are more likely to be positive for the presence of HSV than cultures from subsequent outbreaks.

There are also blood tests that can detect antibodies to the herpes viruses that can be useful in some situations. These tests are specific for HSV-1 or HSV-2 and are able to demonstrate that a person has been infected at some point in time with the virus, and they may be useful in identifying infection that does not produce characteristic symptoms. However, because false-positive results can occur and because the test results are not always clear-cut, they are not recommended for routine use in screening low-risk populations for HSV infection.

Other diagnostic tests such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the genetic material of the virus and rapid fluorescent antibody screening tests are used to identify HSV in some laboratories.

Symptoms of genital herpes are similar in men and women. Once exposed to the virus, there is an incubation period that generally lasts three to seven days before a lesion develops. During this time, there are no symptoms and the virus cannot be transmitted to others. An outbreak usually begins within two weeks of initial infection and manifests as an itching or tingling sensation followed by redness of the skin. Finally, a blister forms. The blisters and subsequent ulcers that form when the blisters break are usually very painful to touch and may last from seven days to two weeks. The infection is definitely contagious from the time of itching to the time of complete healing of the ulcer, usually within two to four weeks. However, as noted above, infected individuals can also transmit the virus to their sex partners in the absence of a recognized outbreak.

Specific signs and symptoms of herpes in women include tiny, fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) on the vulva and vaginal opening. When the vesicles rupture, painful ulcers are the result. In a majority of patients, inflammation of the cervix is involved (cervicitis). Cervicitis may be the only sign of genital herpes in some women. Women with genital herpes may have pain on urination along with infection and inflammation of the urethra (urethritis).

Two types of herpes viruses are associated with genital lesions: herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 more often causes blisters of the mouth area while HSV-2 more often causes genital sores or lesions in the area around the anus. The outbreak of herpes is closely related to the functioning of the immune system. Women who have suppressed immune systems, because of stress, infection, or medications, have more frequent and longer-lasting outbreaks.

It is estimated that as many as 50 million people in the United States are infected with genital HSV. Genital herpes is spread only by direct person-to-person contact. It is believed that 60% of sexually active adults carry the herpes virus. Part of the reason for the continued high infection rate is that most women infected with the herpes virus do not know that they are infected because they have few or no symptoms. In many women, there are “atypical” outbreaks where the only symptom may be mild itching or minimal discomfort. Moreover, the longer the woman has had the virus, the fewer the symptoms they have with their outbreaks. Finally, the virus can shed from the cervix into the vagina in women who are not experiencing any symptoms.

Genital herpes, also commonly called “herpes,” is a viral infection by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) that is transmitted through intimate contact with the mucous-covered linings of the mouth or the vagina or the genital skin. The virus of this STD enters the linings or skin through microscopic tears. Once inside, the virus travels to the nerve roots near the spinal cord and settles there permanently.

When an infected person has a herpes outbreak, the virus travels down the nerve fibers to the site of the original infection. When it reaches the skin, the typical redness and blisters occur. After the initial outbreak, subsequent outbreaks tend to be sporadic. They may occur weekly or even years apart.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through any type of sexual contact. STDs are sometimes referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) since they involve the transmission of a disease-causing microorganism from one person to another during sexual activity. It is important to realize that sexual contact includes more than just sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal). Sexual contact includes kissing, oral-genital contact, and the use of sexual “toys,” such as vibrators. STDs probably have been around for thousands of years, but the most dangerous of these conditions, infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was only recognized in recent decades.

Many STDs are treatable, but effective cures are lacking for others, such as HIV, HPV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Even gonorrhea, once easily cured, has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Many STDs can be present in, and spread by, people who do not have any symptoms of the condition and have not yet been diagnosed with an STD. Therefore, public awareness and education about these infections and the methods of preventing them is important.

There really is no such thing as “safe” sex. The only truly effective way to prevent STDs is abstinence. Sex in the context of a monogamous relationship wherein neither party is infected with a STD also is considered “safe.” Most people think that kissing is a safe activity. Unfortunately, syphilis, herpes, and other infections can be contracted through this relatively simple and apparently harmless act. All other forms of sexual contact carry some risk. Condoms are commonly thought to protect against STDs. Condoms are useful in decreasing the spread of certain infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea; however, they do not fully protect against other infections such as genital herpes, genital warts, syphilis, and HIV. Prevention of the spread of STDs is dependent upon the counseling of at-risk individuals and the early diagnosis and treatment of infections.

In general, type I, also known as herpes labialis, causes infections above the waist, most commonly as oral “cold sores.” Type II infections occur mainly below the waist, leading to genital herpes.
Herpes infections, no matter where they occur first, have a tendency to recur in more or less the same place. Such recurrences may happen often (for example, several times per year) or only occasionally (for example, once or twice a year).

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause infections that affect the mouth, the face, the genitals, the skin, the buttocks, and the anal area. This article will concentrate on non-genital herpes. Many people acquire the virus and have no symptoms. For others, painful blisters appear near the area where the virus entered the body. Typically, the blisters heal completely but reappear at some point in the future when least expected (or desired). In between attacks, the virus resides deep in the roots of the nerves that supply the involved area. When herpes simplex lesions appear in their most common location, around the mouth and lips, people often refer to them as “cold sores” and “fever blisters.”
